Tuesday 1 December

Last night I had a discussion with Caroline Gregory, and Joanna McCormick, both artists, and parents, about this residency, and child's play - particularly about whether, and how much, children are conscious that they are playing, whilst actually playing.

It was agreed children know they playing, but 'lose themselves' whilst playing.

This would seem to paralell the experience of creativity, in that you are aware you are painting, drawing, writing, composing, dancing, etc, but often this involves 'losing oneself' in the process of making the work.

A point was made about the difficulty of playing with your own children, and how this often felt NOT to be playing, because there is always thought of the next thing to do: meal to cook, clothes to wash, food to buy.
